New Grandbabies in Arlington

Kathy's middle daughter Kristin delivered beautiful twin boys this past Sunday evening. Her water broke at home at about 9:45 in the evening. She called her Doc and then her mom. Kathy ran out the door in one minute and she and Todd had Kristin to the hospital in what seemed to be only 15 minutes. The babies were 6 weeks short of full term. Miles was 5-3 and Sam was 4-9. They will spend a few days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Center to gain a bit of weight and practice the sucking. Congratulations to Kris and Todd. We can't wait to see them home. I added a small set of photos to Kevin's Photos on the sidebar here.

They are both beautiful, Kevin. Our congratulations and best wishes to Todd and Kristin. Great to see that both boys are breathing on their own. How is the eating going?

The day shift nurse in the NNIC showed Kristin some "tricks" about the bottle feeding so the boys are taking almost all of their 40ml requirement. This was a BIG turnaround.

That is good news! What kinds of requirements are there for the boys to come home? Weight? Ability to take all nourishment from the bottle? How is Laney making out without her mommy?!!!

Generally, the boys have to be able to take in breast milk or a bottle without assistance from a feeding tube. The specialists say that at 34 to 35 weeks it's just not in their code. They will "get it" in another week. So everyone is hoping for few more days to a week before they come home. Kathy said Kristin is in such good spirits since she came home yesterday. She is happy to be with Laney and is going back to feed and take care of the twins several times a day.

I am glad to hear that Kristin is able to be home with Laney and still manage to go back and forth to the hospital to feed Sam and Miles. Any increase in the amount of times a day or amount of milk that either boy can take from a bottle at this point?

Yes. Kathy went over at 8:30 this morning to handle the feeding on behalf of Kristin. Both Kristin and Todd had to be in Fort Worth this morning to sign some papers to make Laney a Citizen. Kathy said that Sam, the feisty smaller boy has been taking all of his formula by bottle. Miles turned the corner in the last 24 hours and both boys no longer have a feeding tube. The nurses are talking about the boys coming home this week, possibly by Thursday.

Megan sent me the news that Kristin and Todd are "rooming in" with Miles and Sam tonight so that means that TOMORROW the boys are coming home!! Wonderful news in that it means that they are strong but oh, my! Who is going to be on the team of first responders tomorrow?!!!

Kristin and the boys came home this afternoon. Caitlin called me at 5:00 this afternoon when she left her school in Dallas. She was on her way to Kristin's. I texted Kathy at 5:00. She was still at the surgery center and didn't think she would get to Kristin's until 6:30. Kathy has put in extra duty this week, at her job all day and helping Kristin every evening. It's a good thing that they live so close to us. Just 6 blocks away.
