BigPicture

I just saw this today. It's called BigPicture. It's part of the Boston.com website which is the online version of the Boston Globe. We don't watch TV news (don't get me wrong, we watch plenty of TV, just not the news) so seeing these high resolution pictures helps me think about these events. Using the web also allows you to choose the big picture you want to see and how long you want to look at them. Anyway I thought I'd pass this along.

What was this event? Do I see prayer mats? This brings to mind the photographer who gets lots and lots of people to stand naked. Lots of people.

Kris that's a good comment. From here you don't know what this is. I should have linked to the page which provides a description along with the picture. Check out the main site. Sorry for the confusion.

Brian, I clicked on the embedded link to the Big Picture and was amazed at the beauty, color, dirversity, texture, and humanity in these high definition shots. Oh to be a professional photographer and spend your life searching and capturing images like these. I remember discussions in the mid 20th century that cast aspersion on photography as a "fine" art. Westin, Adams, and Modetti were able to refute and rebuff that argument in their times. Now there are a million well equipped artists that that have the hardware (cameras, lenses) and software (processing) to bring us stunning images. Once again Brian, thanks for the site and the insite.

 When watching the evening news today, I saw an image of coal barges lined up at the docks at the USS Mon Valley Steel Plant.  Of course the news segment was about the White House blocking the sale of USS to Nippon Steel.  My mind wandered to to dad's career at the Robena Prep Plant.  I didn't think that it was still in operation but I searched for more information.  I found that the Robena deep mines closed in 1983, but plant continued to operate until 2017 processing coal from surface mining for Consol Mining.  It seems that reclamation of the site began many years before 2017, most likely mandated by local concerns about environmental damage from seepage from the three large slurry ponds and other surface contamination.  Dad took me out one Sunday afternoon to inspect the dikes and berms around the ponds.  We had to hop into one of the big company trucks to traverse the dirt roads around the site.
